Phenylalanine – Essential Amino Acid For Normal Growth And Development

Phenylalanine is an essential amino acid that is needed for normal human growth and development. Lack of enzyme that changes phenylalanine into another amino acid – called tyrosine, another amino acid that is needed to make proteins, brain chemicals and thyroid hormones – can increase the levels of phenylalanine in the blood.

PKU disorder is caused by body’s inability to metabolize phenylalanine, which causes high levels of Phe and ultimately, if it’s not treated after the child’s birth, can cause mental retardation.
